“เราเชื่อว่าจริงๆ ว่าสถาปัตยกรรมคืองานศิลปะ มันสร้างขึ้นจากเความแม่นยำ ความละเอียดอ่อน และความเมตตา ดังนั้นในแง่หนึ่งการทำโครงการก็อาจเปรียบเหมือนการแต่งบทกวี ตอนที่คุณแต่งบทกวีคุณก็พยายามที่จะหาคำเพียงไม่กี่คำ แต่ด้วยคำเหล่านี้เท่านั้นที่จะทำให้ประโยคหรือข้อความนี้ไพเราะงดงาม” หนึ่งในคำอธิบายปรัชญาการทํางานออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมของ Jean-Philippe Massa จาก Lacaton & Vassel Architects ประเทศฝรั่งเศส เมื่อครั้งที่เคยให้สัมภาษณ์กับวารสารอาษาในปี 2559 และได้รับเชิญมาถ่ายทอดผลงานต่างๆ ของทั้งคู่ให้เราฟังใน ASA Forum ปีเดียวกัน เป็นเรื่องน่ายินดีที่สถาปนิกผู้ให้แรงบันดาลใจทั้งคู่ Anne Lacaton และ Jean-Philippe Vassal ได้รับรางวัล Pitzker Architecture Prize อันเกียรติยศทางสถาปัตยกรรมระดับโลกประจำปี 2554 นี้ ที่ประกาศผลไปเมื่อเดือนมีนาคมที่ผ่านมา
ผลงานออกแบบกว่าสามทศวรรษของทั้งคู่ได้สะท้อนความฝันของสถาปนิกยุคสมัยใหม่ในการปรับปรุงคุณภาพชีวิตของคนจำนวนมากผ่านงานออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม ในขณะเดียวกันก็พยายามตอบสนองต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสภาพภูมิอากาศระบบนิเวศ และสังคมอย่างร่วมสมัย โดยเฉพาะการให้คุณค่าต่อความต้องการทางสังคมในขอบเขตของการอยู่อาศัยในเมืองสำหรับกรรมการผู้ตัดสินรางวัลต่างมองว่าผลงานออกแบบของทั้งคู่นอกจากจะสะท้อนปรัชญาแนวคิดผ่านพื้นที่ ภาษา และวัสดุที่ประกอบสร้างสถาปัตยกรรม ยังแสดงออกถึงสุนทรียศาสตร์และจริยธรรมในวิชาชีพที่รับผิดชอบต่อชีวิตของผู้คน ความยั่งยืนทางสิ่งแวดล้อม สังคม และเศรษฐกิจด้วยการใช้ทรัพยากรให้น้อย ดังเช่นในคำตอบทางการออกแบบตั้งแต่โครงการ Palais de Tokyo ในปารีส การปรับปรุงอาคารชุดพักอาศัยยุค 1960s Tour Bols le Prêtre ในปารีสและ Grand Parc ในบอร์กโดวซ์ หรือการปรับอาคารโรงงานสมัยหลังสงครามเป็นศูนย์ศิลปะ FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais ที่ผลลัพธ์ต่างเน้นเรื่องความสร้างสรรค์ในการปรับเปลี่ยนและนำมาใช้ใหม่ มากกว่าการรื้อถอนทุบอาคารเดิมทิ้งไป
สำหรับมุมมองของสถาปนิก Anne Lacaton และ Jean Philippe Vassal เองอาจมองว่าไม่ใช่สถาปัตยกรรมของพวกเขาที่น่าประทับใจ แต่คือการสร้างอิสรภาพให้กับผู้คนได้เคลื่อนไหวปรับเปลี่ยนและสร้างปฏิสัมพันธ์กับสถาปัตยกรรมนั้นเองต่างหากที่สำคัญ ดังเช่นในบทสัมภาษณ์ที่ Anne Lacaton เคยกล่าวไว้ว่า
การที่เราเข้าใจงานสถาปัตยกรรมของเราอย่างถ่องแท้ก็คือการที่เราสามารถจะตั้งสมมติฐานว่าผู้คนกำลังทําอะไรกับมันไม่ใช่แค่กำหนดให้มันเป็น เราพยายามจะสร้างสภาพแวดล้อมเพื่อให้มันเกิดขึ้น
“We really believe that architecture is an art. It is made of precision, delicacy and kindness. So, in a way, making a project could be like making a poem. When you make a poem, you try to find a few words but only these ones can make this sentence or this text so beautiful” described Jean- Philippe Vassal of Lacaton & Vassel Architects, France – in an interview with ASA Journal in 2016 when Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal were invited to give a lecture at ASA Forum in the same year. It is delightful that inspiring architects like Lacaton and Vassal were awarded the world renowned Pritzker Architecture Prize, announced in March.
For more than three decades, Lacaton & Vassel has reinvigorated the modernist hopes and dreams to improve the lives of many through their work that responds to the climatic and ecological emergencies of our time, as well as social urgencies, particularly in the realm of urban housing. According to the 2021 Pritzker Prize Jury Citation, their work has reflected their philosophy through a power- ful sense of space and materials that creates architecture as strong in its forms as in its convictions, as transparent in its aesthetic as in its ethics. It also responds to the lives of people, environment, sustainability, society and economy by using modest resources.
This is shown in their design for the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the renovation of the 1960s Tour Bois le Prêtre in Paris and the Grand Parc in Bordeaux, and the conversion of the post-war factory building to the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais art center, where the results are focused on creativity in modification, renovation and reuse, rather than demolition.
For Lacaton and Vassal, perhaps it might not be about their impressive architecture, but it is more about the freedom created for people to move, change and interact with architecture that really matters. As Lacaton said in the interview – “What we can understand through our architecture is what we can assume that people are doing some- thing with it, not just only to impose upon it. We try to create the condition so that that can happen.”
