Anupama Kundoo, a female Indian architect, has been awarded the RIBA Charles Jencks Award 2021, becoming the second Indian architect after Charles Correa to have received the award in 2009. The RIBA Award is funded by the money awarded by Charles Jencks when he received the Nara Gold Medal in 1992 which was originally set up for an exchange program between British and Japanese architects. Later on, its objectives were changed in 2003, shifting towards awarding architects who have made a significant contribution to thinking and building on the theory and practice of the architectural profession. Architects who have received awards in recent years include Ensamble Studio (2019), Alejandro Aravena (2018), Herzog & de Meuron (2015), and Zaha Hadid (2006).

Kundoo’s career in architecture has focused on design and research into sustainable building technologies. Her main interest is in the use of renewable materials, local materials, and construction methods that combine both local and contemporary techniques while responding to the social and economic context of that particular area. Kundoo’s holistic approach to design combines theoretical work, material research, and sustainable construction methods which appear in most of her work, from small residential designs, public buildings, including many award-winning designs such as the Wall House (2000), to urban planning in Auroville, India from 1990-2005. Kundoo has also lectured at various universities such as the University of Queensland in Australia or Parsons The New School for Design in New York before teaching at the Fachhochschule Potsdam in Germany and then setting up a design office in Berlin.
Anupama Kundoo is an architect who puts theory into practice and creates new meanings for architecture as well, which has led her to win this prestigious award. Among other architects, the nominees include Nigel Coates, Beatriz Colomina, Francis Kéré, and MASS Design Group. Earlier this year Kundoo was also been awarded the Auguste Perret Prize for Technology by The International Union of Architects.
