Bangkok Design Week 2021

Bangkok Design Week is one of the major events in the city’s event calendar and a pivotal part of the attempt to push Thailand’s capital city to become Bangkok City of Design and be included in the UNESCO Creative City Network. The campaign is carried out by the Creative Economy Agency ( CEA ) along with co-supporters from both the private and governmental sector, educational institutes, including designers and entrepreneurs of creative businesses. Through the past four years since its commencement, Bangkok Design Week has attained its status as a platform that showcases new ideas and potentials of creative thinkers and designers, contributing as a positive driving force behind the growth of Thailand’s creative industry, which continues to expand its impacts on different parts of the business sector.

เทศกาลงานออกแบบกรุงเทพฯ หรือ Bangkok Design Week เป็นเทศกาลสำคัญที่ได้รับบรรจุไว้ในปฏิทินกิจกรรมของกรุงเทพมหานคร และเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการผลักดันให้กรุงเทพมหานคร ได้รับคัดเลือกเป็นเครือข่ายเมืองสร้างสรรค์ ในสาขาด้านการออกแบบ Bangkok City of Design จากยูเนสโก (UNESCO Creative City Network) ที่ดำเนินการโดยสำนักงานส่งเสริมเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์ หรือ CEA ร่วมกับผู้จัดงานทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชน สถาบันการศึกษา รวมถึงนักออกแบบและธุรกิจสร้างสรรค์มากมาย โดยการจัดเทศกาลงานออกแบบกรุงเทพฯ ทั้ง 4 ครั้ง ได้นำเสนอแนวคิดใหม่ๆ และศักยภาพสำคัญของเหล่านักสร้างสรรค์ ซึ่งไม่เพียงแต่เป็นอีกหนึ่งเวทีในการแสดงผลงานของนักออกแบบ แต่ยังเป็นผลเชิงบวกต่ออุตสาหกรรมสร้างสรรค์ของไทยที่ขยายผลวงกว้างสู่ธุรกิจแวดล้อมต่างๆ ในเวลาเดียวกัน

สำหรับเทศกาลออกแบบ Bangkok Design Week 2021 ที่ถูกเลื่อนออกมาตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นปี และเพิ่งจัดกิจกรรมไปเมื่อวันที่ 8 พฤษภาคม ถึง 31 กรกฎาคม 2564 ที่ผ่านมา ภายใต้แนวคิด “Resurgence of Possibilities ก้าวต่อไปสู่ความเป็นไปได้ใหม่” นับว่าเป็นการกลับมาหลังจากสถานการณ์โควิด-19 ที่ไม่ธรรมดา ด้วยรูปแบบการจัดเทศกาลฯ ทั้งในรูปแบบออนไลน์และพื้นที่จริง เพื่อลดความเสี่ยงการแพร่ระบาดของโรคโควิด-19 หนึ่งโปรแกรมไฮไลท์ของงาน คือนิทรรศการที่เน้นนำเสนอแนวคิดการออกแบบเพื่อส่งเสริมการมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมต้นแบบการพัฒนาพื้นที่ย่านต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ ย่านเจริญกรุง-ทรงวาด, สามย่าน, อารีย์-ประดิพัทธ์, และทองหล่อ-เอกมัย จากสถาปนิกและนักออกแบบที่เข้าร่วมจัดแสดงมากกว่า 300 ผลงาน และมีผลงานหลายชิ้นได้มีการก่อสร้างจริงและจัดแสดงในพื้นที่สาธารณะของเมือง หนึ่งในนั้นคือผลงาน ‘Common Air-rea’ จาก CLOUD FLOOR ร่วมกับ UCCN ที่นำเสนอความเป็นไปได้ในการออกแบบพื้นที่สาธารณะส่วนกลางในช่วงเทศกาล Bangkok Design Week 2021 เพื่อช่วยบรรเทาและพัฒนาคุณภาพอากาศในพื้นที่ให้ผู้ที่เข้ามาใช้งานได้รับอากาศที่บริสุทธิ์ขึ้น โดยอาศัยการออกแบบที่ผสมผสานกัน 3 ส่วน คือ การสร้างพื้นที่ปิด ใช้ธรรมชาติช่วยดักกรอง และการใช้นวัตกรรมทันสมัย

อีกหนึ่งผลงานที่น่าสนใจ คือ ‘Activating Vacancies’ จาก Imaginary Objects แนวคิดการออกแบบที่เล็งเห็นปัญหาของกรุงเทพมหานครที่เต็มไปด้วยพื้นที่ที่ถูกใช้งานอย่างไม่เต็มศักยภาพ ซึ่งต่างมาพร้อมกับเรื่องของแสงสว่างที่ไม่เพียงพอและการขาดแคลนเฟอร์นิเจอร์ในพื้นที่สาธารณะ นำไปสู่ผลงานออกแบบพื้นที่ให้แสงสว่างเฉพาะจุด พร้อมเฟอร์นิเจอร์ที่สามารถปรับเปลี่ยนการใช้งานได้ เพื่อนำเสนอความเป็นไปได้ในการจัดหาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานสำหรับการทำกิจกรรมชั่วคราวต่างๆ ในพื้นที่สาธารณะ ในขณะที่ผลงาน ‘ศาลาคอย(ล์)เย็น’ โดย Nikken Sekkei  เป็นผลงานที่นอกจากจะให้ความสำคัญกับผู้ใช้งานในพื้นที่สาธารณะ แต่ยังให้ความสำคัญไปถึงความเป็นไทยดั้งเดิม สถาปนิกจาก Nikken Sekkei หยิบวัสดุก่อสร้างพื้นถิ่นที่หาได้ง่ายในประเทศไทย อย่างอิฐดินเผา มาใช้ร่วมกับแนวคิดในการออกแบบ ที่ไม่เพียงแต่เป็นวัสดุที่ถูกใช้ในงานก่อสร้างสถาปัตยกรรมไทยมาแต่โบราณ แต่ยังมีคุณสมบัติคล้ายคลึงกับเทคโนโลยีท่อเซรามิก BIOSKIN หรือฟาซาดที่ช่วยให้เกิดการไหลเวียนของน้ำฝนได้ดี ซึ่งถูกนำมาใช้กับงานออกแบบอาคาร NFB Osaki Building (Sony City Osaki) กรุงโตเกียว ประเทศญี่ปุ่น อีกด้วย ผลงานศาลาคอย(ล์)เย็น จึงเป็นผลงานที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นพื้นที่สาธารณะที่ให้ความรู้สึกสบายแก่ผู้ใช้งาน และคืนความชื้นสู่ชั้นบรรยากาศ โดยการปรับเปลี่ยนมุมมอง วิธีการก่อสร้าง รูปแบบที่มีความยืดหยุ่น และความหลากหลายในการใช้งาน

นอกจากนี้ ยังมีโครงการ ‘สนามเด็กเล่นโชฎึก’ ที่เคยเป็นเพียงแนวคิดและต้นแบบโครงการเล็กๆ โครงการหนึ่ง แต่เจ้าของโครงการอย่าง SCG D’COR ได้ต่อยอดเชิญชวนสถาปนิกและนักออกแบบรุ่นใหม่มาร่วมเวิร์กช็อปพัฒนาสิ่งก่อสร้างนี้ เพื่อปรับปรุงพื้นที่สาธารณะภายในชุมชนโชฎึก กับ Hypothesis Studio และ Vaslab Architecture ภายใต้คอนเซ็ปต์ ‘Unique the Space’ ซึ่งประสบความสำเร็จเป็นอย่างดี จากการร่วมมือกันของหลายๆ ฝ่าย ส่งผลให้โครงการนี้ถูกสร้างและพร้อมใช้งานจริงได้ทันเทศกาล Bangkok Design Week 2021 แสดงให้เห็นว่าการพัฒนาให้เมืองดีขึ้น ต้องการความร่วมมือจากหลายภาคส่วน และสถาปนิกและนักออกแบบมีบทบาทสำคัญมากในการร่วมสร้างสรรค์ย่านและเมืองให้ดีขึ้น ในเทศกาลครั้งนี้ยังมีอีกหลายผลงานออกแบบที่แม้ไม่ได้สร้างจริง แต่นำเสนอแนวคิดทางสถาปัตยกรรมมาร่วมแก้ปัญหาสภาพแวดล้อมของเมือง พัฒนาคน และชุมชนเมืองได้อย่างน่าสนใจ ซึ่งหากมีการนำแนวคิดการออกแบบเหล่านี้ไปใช้แก้ปัญหาและพัฒนาย่านได้จริงต่อไป ก็คงจะเป็นเรื่องที่ดีไม่น้อย

For Bangkok Design Week 2021, which was postponed from the beginning of the year to the new designated dates from May 8th to July 31st, 2021, the theme “Resurgence of Possibilities” is a noteworthy return after the pandemic with curatorial programs that range from online to offline exhibitions, all an attempt to minimize the risks from the COVID-19. 

One of the highlights this year is the exhibition which revolves around the presentation of design concepts that promote better living quality through architectural and urban developments in different areas of Bangkok, from Charoenkrung-Songward, Samyan, Ari-Pradipat, and Thonglor-Ekamai. From the minds of over 300 architects and designers, many of the works have been constructed and exhibited in various public spaces of the city. Among them is ‘Common Air-rea’ by CLOUD FLOOR who works together with UCCN to propose a new design possibility with the pop-up public/common space launched during the Bangkok Design Week 2021. The project intends to relieve air pollution problems and improve the area’s air quality for people to be exposed to cleaner air with the design that devises and integrates three methods from open space facilitation, natural filtration to modern innovations. 

Another interesting project is ‘Activating Vacancies’ by Imaginary Objects. IO comes up with the design concept that pinpoints one of Bangkok’s most discernible issues, which is the city’s failure to use its public spaces to their fullest potential, be it insufficient lighting, or the lack of furniture. It leads the design of public space with proper localized lighting and the design of furniture with adjustable functionalities. The project proposes possibilities to procure and provide basic infrastructures that can accommodate different temporary activities happening in the city’s public spaces. 

Designed by Nikken Sekkei, the “Stay Cool Pavilion” emphasized on the public space users and the inherent characteristics of Thai-ness. The architects from Nikken Sekkei pick up on construction materials locally available in Thailand such as red bricks to help materialize the design concept. The material, which has been used as one of the principal materials in Thai architecture since the ancient time, possesses similar physical attributes to the ceramic tube technology, BIO SKIN, the facade system the studio designed for the NFB Osaki Building (Sony City Osaki) in Tokyo, Japan, which can enhance the flow and circulation of rainwater. “Stay Cool Pavilion”, therefore, serves as a public space that simultaneously provides users a thermal comfort while releasing humidity back into the atmosphere, all achieved through the architects’ reframed perspectives and mindset, which result in construction methods and styles that are different, more flexible and diversified.

Equally exciting is Choduk Playground, a conceptual design of what was intended to be a prototype of a small project, but thanks to the developer, SCG D’COR, who invited young generation architects and designers to participate in the workshop, which contributed to the development of the built structure and its role in improving the public space inside the Choduk Community. Supervised by Hypothesis Studio and Vaslab Architecture under the ‘Unique the Space’ concept, the workshop and the project is a great success. The collaboration enables Choduk Playground to complete the construction and showcase at Bangkok Design Week 2021 while the project itself illustrates how urban development requires participation from various involved sectors, including the crucial role architects and designers play in the improvement of urban neighborhoods. 

There are several projects featured in Bangkok Design Week that have not been materialized but do their job wonderfully in proposing architectural ideas as something that can help solve the issues surrounding a city, as well as the development of its people and communities. It would be amazing to see these design concepts get realized and substantially provide solutions to reinforce new improvements of urban neighborhoods.
