นอกจากการพัฒนาความคิดสร้างสรรค์และความสามารถในการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมของสถาปนิก สิ่งหนึ่งที่มีความสำคัญไม่แพ้กันในกระบวนการพัฒนาการออกแบบ ก็คือการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมการก่อสร้างควบคู่กันไปด้วย และในกระบวนการนั้น การพัฒนาวัสดุสำหรับงานสถาปัตยกรรมและการก่อสร้าง นับว่ามีบทบาทสำคัญ การส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนผู้ผลิตหรือนำเข้าวัสดุสำหรับงานสถาปัตยกรรมและการก่อสร้างที่มีความน่าสนใจในประเด็นต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะด้วยการให้ความรู้ การเผยแพร่วัสดุที่มีศักยภาพในรูปของการประชาสัมพันธ์ การคัดเลือกหรือให้รางวัลจากองค์กรวิชาชีพหรือที่เกี่ยวข้อง ล้วนเป็นส่วนสนับสนุนและผลักดัน ให้ผู้ผลิตหรือผู้ประกอบการ พยายามพัฒนาวัสดุหรือบริการทั้งในทางตรงและทางอ้อม ซึ่งจะมีผลกลับมาสู่วงการวิชาชีพในลักษณะบูรณาการ
วัสดุที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกจาก ASA Platform ในวารสารอาษาฉบับพิเศษนี้ แสดงให้เห็นถึงแนวทางและศักยภาพที่หลากหลาย หลาย ๆ วัสดุได้แสดงให้เห็นถึงแนวคิดที่สอดคล้องกับทิศทางการออกแบบและการก่อสร้างทั่วโลกที่ตั้งคำถามถึงการใช้ทรัพยากร แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับความยั่งยืนในสาขาต่าง ๆ ซึ่งรวมถึงการประหยัดพลังงาน การนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่ เศรษฐกิจหมุนเวียน การจัดการขยะเหลือทิ้งในอุตสาหกรรม ไปจนถึงเรื่องของการปล่อยก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ในกระบวนการผลิตและบริการ
หลายวัสดุมุ่งเน้นไปที่การสร้างสรรค์นวัตกรรมจากความคิดสร้างสรรค์และการใช้เทคโนโลยีในระดับต่าง ๆ ทั้งตัววัสดุเองและในการทำงานกับวัสดุเดิม มีวัสดุที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นเพื่อตอบโจทย์ของการอยู่อาศัยที่ใช้ระบบอัจฉริยะ ในขณะเดียวกัน ก็มีวัสดุที่มุ่งพัฒนาวิธีคิดและวิธีทำงานเพื่อนำวัสดุที่เป็นวัสดุธรรมชาติที่มีอยู่แล้วมาใช้ให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสุด กระแสความตื่นตัวในเรื่องของสุขภาพและสภาวะ ยังทำให้มีการพัฒนาวัสดุที่มุงเน้นไปที่ความปลอดภัย ความสะดวกสบายและสุขภาพของผู้ใช้งาน ส่วนหนึ่งนอกจากปัจจัยที่มาจากผลกระทบของโรคระบาดที่ส่งผลกระทบไปทั่วโลก ยังเป็นเรื่องของสังคมที่เปลี่ยนไป ซึ่งทำให้เกิดความตระหนักและความต้องการที่เปลี่ยนไป เช่น การเข้าสู่สังคมผู้สูงอายุอย่างสมบูรณ์ของประเทศไทยเอง
แน่นอนว่าวัสดุเหล่านี้ก็จะยังคงปรับปรุงและพัฒนาต่อไปให้มีคุณภาพและความสมดุลที่ดียิ่งขึ้นไปอีกในทุก ๆ ด้าน และเป็นแรงผลักดันให้มีวัสดุและผลิตภัณฑ์ใหม่ ๆ ที่ดีและดีเลิศ ที่เป็นประโยชน์ต่อวงการออกแบบและก่อสร้างต่อไป อย่างไรก็ตาม สิ่งที่ต้องถูกนำมาพิจารณาด้วยนอกเหนือจากเรื่องของธุรกิจ คือประเด็นพื้นฐานในการพัฒนาวัสดุและผลิตภัณฑ์ เช่น ความรับผิดชอบต่อสังคมและโลก ในกระบวนการผลิต การขนส่ง บริการ การนำไปใช้ อายุการใช้งาน และแม้แต่เรื่องของการบริหารจัดการขยะ ทั้งหมดนี้จะเป็นคำถามที่ท้าทายผู้ผลิตและแบรนด์ต่าง ๆ เรื่องเหล่านี้อาจจะไม่ใช่ประเด็นใหม่ เพราะวัสดุที่ถูกนำเสนอในตลาดมาก่อนหน้านี้ ก็ต้องพบกับความท้าทายนี้มาแล้วเช่นเดียวกัน เพียงแต่ว่าในสังคมปัจจุบัน ประะเด็นเหล่านี้ไม่ใช่สิ่งที่จะมองข้ามได้อีกต่อไป
The New Paradigm
When it comes to design development, architects’ creative skills and the constantly evolving construction industry go hand in hand. The advancement of architectural and building materials is critical to the process. The promotion and support provided to material manufacturers and importers, whether through the sharing of knowledge and information via various channels or awards and accolades being given from professional associations or involved organizations within the industry, all serve as vehicles that will directly and indirectly empower these entrepreneurs to develop and innovate their products and services. Generated through such a positive process are integrative returns and benefits to the architectural profession and industry.
The materials selected by the ASA Platform for this special issue of the ASA Journal demonstrate a wide range of approaches and potentials for material development. Several materials reflect ideas and concepts that have evolved in response to global trajectories and trends; for instance, how they question issues such as resource consumption or various aspects of sustainability, such as energy-saving, reusability, and recyclability, the circular economy, industrial waste management, and carbon dioxide emissions in manufacturing processes and services.
Many of the materials focus on coming up with new ideas and making them real, as well as using technology at different levels and scales to improve new physical properties and find new ways to use old materials. There are also a number of materials that have been created to meet new applications in the realm of smart living. Meanwhile, materials are being developed based on the concepts and practices of making the best use of natural and environmentally friendly materials. The growing awareness of health has given birth to a plethora of materials that are designed with the user’s safety, convenience, and well-being in mind. The trend is the result of both the pandemic and the changing social milieu, which has caused people’s awareness and demands to shift. Among the scenarios is Thailand becoming an aged society.
All of these materials will undoubtedly continue to be developed and evolved in order to achieve even higher quality and standards in every possible aspect. These new innovations will accelerate the development of new innovations that will benefit the design and construction industries in the future. But along with the business side of developing materials and products, there are many other things to think about, such as global and environmental responsibility, the manufacturing process, logistics, services, applications, lifespan, and how to deal with waste. All of these aspects continue to pose significant challenges to manufacturers and brands. Given how pre-existing materials on the market have faced similar challenges, they may not all be novel topics. But the main difference is that, in today’s world and society, we cannot afford to ignore any of these issues any longer.
