ช่วยเล่าให้ฟังสั้นๆ ว่าเป็นยังไงมายังไงถึงได้เริ่มก่อตั้ง Blank Studio
อุกฤษฏ์ บวรสิน: Blank Studio ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยคน 6 คน มีผม ตั้ม-อุกฤษฏ์ บวรสิน, แป๊ก-ศตวัชร ขัตลิวงศ์, หวาย-ปาลิดา เศรษฐศุภร, ต่อ-ณพิชญา เพิ่มแสงงาม เป็นวิศวกรคนเดียวของออฟฟิศ และเพื่อนสถาปนิกอีก 2 คน ปัจจุบันได้แยกตัวไปทำอย่างอื่น เรา 6 คน เป็นเพื่อนกันตั้งแต่สมัยเรียนคณะสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ หลังจากเรียนจบพวกเราก็ทำงานเป็นพนักงานประจำกันอยู่พักใหญ่ๆ จนถึงจุดที่มีโอกาสได้คุยกันว่าอยากเริ่มทำอะไรเป็นของตัวเอง และมีงานดีไซน์ในเส้นทางที่ตัวเองเชื่อ เราจึงค่อยๆ ทยอยลาออกจากงานประจำมาช่วยกันรับงานฟรีแลนซ์ ประจวบกับช่วงนั้นก็มีงานเข้ามาเรื่อยๆ ก็เลยเป็นจังหวะที่ดีให้ได้ตั้งสตูดิโอกันขึ้นมาจริงจัง

ที่มาของชื่อ Blank Studio คืออะไร
ศตวัชร ขัตลิวงศ์: เล่าย้อนกลับไปถึงยุคนั้นที่ไม่มีแอพพลิเคชั่นตั้งกลุ่มคุยกันได้อย่างปัจจุบัน มีแต่ Facebook ที่พอจะสามารถสร้างกลุ่มไว้แชร์ข้อมูลข่าวสารหรือคุยเล่นกันได้ เราก็เลยลองสร้างกลุ่มขึ้นมาเพื่อใช้คุยเรื่องงาน แต่ตอนนั้นยังคิดไม่ออกว่าจะตั้งชื่อกลุ่มว่าอะไร เลยพูดลอยๆ กับเพื่อนไปว่า “‘งั้นก็แบล้งค์ไว้ก่อนแล้วกัน” เลยพิมพ์ชื่อกลุ่มว่า Blank ไว้เฉยๆ จนกลายมาเป็นที่มาของชื่อสตูดิโออย่างเป็นทางการ (หัวเราะ)
แนวทางและความเชื่อที่เป็นจุดร่วมของผู้ก่อตั้งทั้ง 6 คนก่อนเริ่มเปิดสตูดิโอคืออะไร
อุกฤษฏ์ บวรสิน: ต้องยกตัวอย่างเชียงใหม่ในยุคก่อนที่สตูดิโอออกแบบแนวล้านนาก็จะออกแบบแต่แนวล้านนา หรือออกแบบแนวโมเดิร์นก็จะออกแบบแต่โมเดิร์นอย่างเดียวไม่ออกแบบล้านนาเลย ซึ่งพวกเราในฐานะที่เป็นทั้งคนภาคเหนือและมองในมุมของสถาปนิกยุคใหม่ เราเห็นตรงกันว่าทุกสไตล์ของสถาปัตยกรรมสามารถเกลารวมกันเป็นปรัชญาเดียวได้ โดยปรัชญาหนึ่งที่พวกเราเชื่อเสมอและคิดว่าสถาปนิกหลายๆ สตูดิโอก็คงมองไม่ต่างกันคือความเรียบง่าย เพราะความเรียบง่ายมันอยู่ได้นานและตกยุคยาก จากนั้นเราจึงค่อยนำเรื่องสไตล์มาจับกับแนวทางนี้ ซึ่งไม่ว่าลูกค้าจะชอบสไตล์ไหนเราก็จะนำความมินิมอลมาเกลาร่วมกับแต่ละสไตล์เพื่อให้องค์รวมทุกอย่างกลับมาจบที่ความเรียบง่าย
ช่วงแรกเริ่มของ Blank Studio เป็นอย่างไร ปัจจุบันเปิดมากี่ปีแล้ว และวางทิศทางของสตูดิโอไปในทิศทางไหน
อุกฤษฏ์ บวรสิน: สตูดิโอนี้เริ่มจากการนัดกันมาทำงานที่หอพักของเพื่อนกับเครื่องปริ้นต์แค่ตัวเดียว (หัวเราะ) พอเข้าที่เข้าทางเราถึงเริ่มขยับมาเช่าห้อง Avenue ในนิมมานเหมินท์ แล้วก็มีเหตุให้ย้ายมาเรื่อยๆ จนมาจบที่ปัจจุบันที่เราปักหลักสตูดิโอกันอยู่ประตูท่าแพ ตอนนี้เราเปิดสตูดิโอมาได้ 11 ปี ขยายฐานลูกค้ามาเรื่อยๆ จากสัดส่วนของประเภทงานที่เคยเป็นแค่บ้านพักอาศัย ก็เริ่มตามมาด้วยคาเฟ่และโรงแรม เพราะเชียงใหม่มีคนเข้ามาทำธุรกิจเยอะมาก
ศตวัชร ขัตลิวงศ์: ทิศทางของเราตอนนี้แบ่งทีมออกเป็น 2 ทีมหลักๆ คือ ทีมออกแบบ และทีมรับเหมา เราวางตัวเป็น one stop service แต่ไม่ใช่ turn-key คือในช่วงที่ถึงกระบวนการก่อสร้างเราก็จะนำทีมรับเหมาของเราไปเสนอกับลูกค้าด้วย ซึ่งส่วนนี้ก็จะเป็นหุ้นส่วนที่เป็นวิศวกรของเราเป็นคนดู ส่วนตอนนี้ประเภทงานที่เข้ามาก็มีหลากหลายมากๆ รวมถึงเราก็ไม่ได้จำกัดว่าเราอยากเป็นสถาปนิกออกแบบงานแนวไหนเป็นพิเศษ เพราะเราอยากโตไปเรื่อยๆ ไม่ได้มีขีดจำกัด ตอนพวกเราเป็นพนักงานบริษัทก็เคยจับงานสเกลใหญ่กันมาทุกคน พวกเราก็เลยสามาถทำงานได้ทุกสเกลและทุกประเภท

ศตวัชร ขัตลิวงศ์: จริงๆ ชอบทุกผลงาน (หัวเราะ) แต่ถ้าให้ยกตัวอย่างอาจเป็นโครงการบ้านลำพูน ที่ใช้เมทัลชีท แล้วก็ช่วงท้ายๆ มานี้จะมีคาเฟ่ร้าน PLUTO กับ Akha Ama Coffee ทั้ง 3 งานนี้ เรารู้สึกว่ามันประสบความสำเร็จมาก ทั้งในแง่ของคนที่เข้าไปใช้งานเค้าก็ดูชอบกันจริงๆ รวมถึงในแง่ของการก่อสร้างก็เป็นไปอย่างที่เราคิด พอองค์ประกอบที่กล่าวมานี้มันลงตัวหมด ก็เลยทำให้ผลงานประสบความสำเร็จ และเกิดเป็นความประทับใจต่อสตูดิโอของเรา
What was it like to start Blank Studio?
Ukrit Borwornsin: Blank Studio was founded by six people, including me – Tam-Ukrit Bowornsin, Pak-Satawatch Katlivong, Wai-Palida Settasuporn, Tor-Naphitchaya Phermsang-ngam, who is the only engineer in the office, and two other architect friends currently have separated to do other things. Six of us have been friends since our school days at the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University. After graduating, we worked as full-time employees for a while. Later until a point of time when we had the opportunity to talk about starting to open a studio of our own. And having design work in the path we believed in, we gradually resigned from full-time jobs to work on freelance ones. At that time, there was a constant flow of work, so it was a good time to get the studio set up seriously.
What is the origin of the name Blank Studio?
Satawatch Katlivong: Well, back when there was no application to set up groups to talk like today, only Facebook was able to create groups to share information or chat. So we made a group to talk about work. But we still couldn’t figure out what to name the group, so I casually said to my friends, “‘Let’s leave it blank first,’ so we just typed the group name Blank, which became the official source of the studio name (laughs).
What was the common approach and belief of the six founders before the studio started?
Ukrit Borwornsin: Years ago in Chiang Mai, most design studios would produce designs in either Lanna or modern style. As northerners and contemporary architects, we agreed that all styles of architecture could be boiled down into one philosophy. The one philosophy that we have always believed and so do many architects, was simplicity. Because simplicity lasts longer and hardly gets out of date. So we gradually brought style to this approach. No matter what direction the customer likes, we will bring minimalism into each one to bring the whole thing back to simplicity.
How were Blank Studio’s early days? How many years has it been open now? And the direction of the studio today.
Ukrit Borwornsin: This studio started by meeting up to work at a friend’s dormitory with only one printer (laughs). Later on, when things began to fall into place, we got to rent an Avenue room in Nimmanhaemin. And for some reason, we have been moving on to a few places. Finally, we have come to settle in the studio at Tha Phae Gate. Now our studio is already in its eleventh year, with an expanding customer base. We have grown from the proportion of the type of work that used to be just a house to cafes and hotels because Chiang Mai has a lot of people coming to do business.
Satawatch Katlivong: The studio structure is now divided into two leading teams, the design and the contractor. We position ourselves as a one-stop service, but not turn-key. During the construction process, we will introduce our contractor team, our engineer partner oversees, to our customers. Now the types and scopes of jobs that come in are very diverse. We are not limiting or confining ourselves to a particular style or direction of architecture studio because we want to keep growing without any conditions or limitations. As company employees, we used to handle all the big-scale projects before, so we believe we can work on all scales and types.
Any examples of your latest work or impressive work you want to share?
Satawatch Katlivong: In fact, I like all the projects we did (laughs), but to give a few examples, I would say the Baan Lamphun project, which uses metal sheets, and then there are cafes like PLUTO and Akha Ama Coffee. These three projects are all very successful—people like what we did. As for the construction, we seem to achieve the results we expected. The works are undoubtedly successful when these factors are all in perfection. And they created good impressions on our studio.
