Realized from the theme ‘How will we live together?’ the Thai pavilion delivers the key message through its interpretation of coexistence, not just between humans but humans and the environment, including all the living creatures residing on this planet.

เราจะอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างไร ที่ไม่ใช่แค่มนุษย์กับมนุษย์ หรือมนุษย์กับสิ่งแวดล้อม แต่รวมถึงสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นร่วมโลกเป็นสารที่นิทรรศการของประเทศไทยนำาเสนอไว้ในงาน นิทรรศการสถาปัตยกรรมนานาชาติครั้งที่ 17- Venice Biennale 2021 โดยความร่วมมือของสมาคมสถาปนิกสยาม ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ นำทีมโดย รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.อภิรดี เกษมสุข ในฐานะหัวหน้าภัณฑารักษ์ กับสำนักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย (สศร.) กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งได้มอบหมายให้สถาปนิกจาก Bangkok Project Studio ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ บุญเสริม เปรมธาดา ศิลปินศิลปาธรประจำาปี 2562 ซึ่งเป็นผู้ออกแบบโครงการโลกของช้าง (Elephant World) ไว้ที่จังหวัดสุรินทร์ ร่วมออกแบบนิทรรศการ “บ้านคน บ้านช้าง” เพื่อร่วมจัดแสดงที่เมืองเวนิส ประเทศอิตาลี ในช่วงระหว่างเดือนพฤษภาคม-พฤศจิกายน 2564
นิทรรศการของไทยในปีนี้นำเสนอมิติใหม่ด้วยการจัดแสดง นิทรรศการทั้งในประเทศไทยและอิตาลีคู่ขนานกัน ทั้งผลงานที่ติดตั้งอยู่ที่เวนิส และงานก่อสร้างจริงอีกชิ้นหนึ่ง เป็นนิทรรศการกลางแจ้งติดตั้งไว้ ณ บริเวณวัดป่าอาเจียง จังหวัดสุรินทร์ เพื่อเป็นศาลากลางแจ้งให้ชาวอำเภอท่าตูมได้ใช้งานไปด้วย แนวความคิดหลักในการออกแบบ “บ้านคน บ้านช้าง” ของผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์บุญเสริม ในฐานะสถาปนิกได้แสดงให้เห็นถึงปฏิสัมพันธ์ที่ตัดขาดกันไม่ได้ของวิถีชีวิตชุมชน ชาวกูยกับช้างที่อยู่ร่วมกันมาอย่างยาวนาน ผ่านชิ้นส่วนโครงสร้างของสถาปัตยกรรมท้องถิ่นที่เรียบง่ายอย่างเรือนเตี้ยของบ้านคนและเสาสูงของบ้านช้างที่มักจะพบเห็นอยู่ด้วยกันเสมอในหมู่บ้านช้าง แต่ในการออกแบบ นิทรรศการครั้งนี้ได้มีการออกแบบและประกอบสร้างใหม่ด้วยวัสดุไม้เก่าจากเรือนเดิม ถ่ายทอดออกมาผ่านการก่อสร้างโดยช่างในพื้นที่เอง ซึ่งทั้งร่องรอยวัสดุเก่าและฝีมือของช่างอาจไม่สมบูรณ์แบบแต่สะท้อนถึงความธรรมดา สามัญของวิถีชีวิตจริงๆของการอยู่อาศัยของคนและช้างในพื้นที่เดียวกันได้เป็นอย่างดี
The pavilion of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale is a collaborative effort between the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage led by Associate Professor Dr. Apiradee Kasemsook, the appointed lead curator, and the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture. The OCRC assigns the principal architect and founder of Bangkok Project Studio, and 2018’s Silpathorn laureate, Assistant Professor Boonserm Premthada, who is also the mind behind the iconic Elephant World project in Surin province of Thailand, to oversee the design of the Thai Twin Pavilion.
The work, which is exhibited as a part of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale between May and November of 2021, takes a new approach with two parallel exhibitions, one in Thailand and the other in Venice, Italy. The pavilion installed at Venice is accompanied by the permanent exhibition built at Ar Jiang Temple in Tha Tum district, Surin, Thailand. The curatorial and design team intend for the permanently built outdoor pavilion in the Tha Toom district so that the people there can make use of it.
