The inception of Pareena Decor, the brand she founded, begins with the founder’s study and self-introduction to natural materials, from their sources, physical properties and applications in product design. It started with her visiting and getting to know wooden craft products being made by a community of craftspeople near her home. She then proceeded to work with local artisans to dive deep into the techniques used and applied to wooden materials, and ultimately to attain a true understanding in different species of trees and wood, their potentials and natural elements as factors affecting a product’s aesthetic and functional merits. With the acquired body of knowledge, she began developing a series of lamps using locally sourced natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, and teak wood, which were later launched as the first product line under the Pareena Decor brand. It was a decade ago when Ratchanee first pioneered the online market, gradually making her brand become widely reputable among designers and architects in Thailand and overseas.

Despite having no background in furniture design, Ratchanee and the brand were gaining recognition and more architects and designers were asking for other types of products such as tables, chairs, cabinets and beds. Ratchanee’s solution to such requests was to offer a made-to-order service, materializing the clients’ ideas and demands into pieces of furniture, each made with incredible meticulousness and quality control that live up to the Pareena’s handicrafts standard.

Ratchanee always explains to her architect and designer clients who come to her with their own unique ideas that what makes each piece of furniture distinctive are the handcrafted details and the intrinsic natural elements of the material that may not be one hundred percent impeccable, nor perfectly refined and polished, yet these imperfections are what make crafts so charming. Bringing out the most of the materials’ potentials, be it rattan, bamboo or teak wood, is what the brand prioritizes and has become one of the integral parts of Pareena’s identity. It’s also something Ratchanee always gets across to the clients before their collaborative design and production process begins.

Such an honest and effective work process that ends up delivering clients desired and satisfying results has led Pareena to work with designers and architects inside and outside of Thailand. Pareena’s furniture, as a result, has made its way to many leading architectural projects from residences to upscale hotels and resorts, department stores and boutiques. The challenges in creating furniture for each project lies in the materialization of lines and details that turn conceptualized ideas into an envisioned reality. As a designer, having to work with new elements, requirements and concepts is always something to overcome through time and Pareena’s artisans are expected to develop themselves in order to keep up with clients’ creative inputs and imaginations, resulting in each piece being the most accurate embodiment of the design from which it’s conceived. It’s been ten years since Pareena was born; a decade of Ratchanee’s continued search for new possibilities in natural materials, of creative endeavors that are now thriving with the brand’s recently opened second showroom in Chiang Mai, following the first branch in Lampang.

The brand’s growth is not only an implication of the growing interest in crafts but also means a greater generation of income and higher pay for local artisans with masterful skills, from wood working, colors to weaving. Ratchanee also intends for her brand to be a part of this small industry, serving as a force that helps propel the use of materials that are friendlier to the environment, which takes place alongside the attentiveness in the quality, details and aesthetics of every single piece of furniture. These elements are made discernible, becoming the value that stays and grows with each piece over time. The hope is for these values to be realized and appreciated by the owner, resulting in the love for the furniture that makes one want to keep the piece with them without throwing it away. It’s a perfect cycle of how a material, be it wood or wood scraps left over from other production processes, is given a new life and becomes a part of a work of architecture for tens or even a hundred years to come. Such an approach is among many intentions that Ratchanee has for Pareena Decor—for the brand to be a mediator that communicates with architecture and users before these natural materials eventually deteriorate and return to nature where they initially came from, as a part of the cycle, without leaving anything behind along the way.
